Amazon Gambles on the Kids

Amazon’s announcement of their Kindle Kids’ publishing software platform probably caught very few in the industry off-guard. It’s been clear that Amazon’s ambition is to become both the publisher and the retailer, which, irrespective of what the industry feels, lines up perfectly with Amazon’s stated goal of delivering better value to their customers.

I thought it would be interesting to explore what Amazon’s goal is here and whether it will work.

It seems that not a week goes by recently when we hear about a company that is “Netflix for eBooks” or “Spotify for publishing”. While I think that the industry desperately needs innovation and fresh thinking, I have my doubts about this type of model ported from other media areas. It may very well be where the industry ends up in time, but I think for the next 2-3 years these start-ups will find it tough.

Worldwide eBook Growth in 2013

Probably the biggest takeaway from US media in 2013 was that ebook growth rates are levelling off, with reports anywhere from flat sales to more optimistic 30% to 40% growth rates. That’s still a lot of dollars, but significantly less growth than previous years.

Here in Europe though, the picture looks a little bit different.
